Frontside/Backside
Good friends, easy times, freedom, tricks, and the inimitable sound of skateboards hitting the ground. If you’re a part of this group then you feel that, at least for a moment, the world is yours. And this magic feeling can be felt even by those who are just watching and are not currently testing the limits of balance in motion. After the success of films such as Mid90s, Skate Kitchen, and King Skate, we decided to explore if the short-film sector possessed similar hidden gems. The program Frontside/Backside offers a mix of films, music videos, and skate videos that are sure to waken the skater within all of us. The forgotten 1965 treasure Skaterdater, which won an award for best short film at Cannes and was even nominated for an Oscar, is a sweet romance and also one of the earliest film on the subject of skateboarding. Australia’s multi-award-winning Melon Grab captures the “final group ride” of a group of best friends. And Spike Jonze’s Fully Flared – a video showing a group of professional skaters tackling exploding obstacles in slow motion – has achieved cult status since first being released. Meanwhile, the experimental On/Off presents a study of skateboarding between light and dark, while directors Johannes Nyholm, Andreas Nilsson, and Bo Melin present skateboard retro in a video for Sweden’s legendary electronic duo The Knife and their song Heartbeats.
