International Competition 1
The International Competition of the 20th anniversary edition of the Pragueshorts film festival presents twenty-eight films made with the involvement (thanks to international co-productions) of twenty-three countries. The participating films by new filmmakers as well as familiar names cover a range of current issues, contemporary trends, and innovative stylistic approaches. Presented in five blocks, they introduce audiences to the cinematic output of countries that only rarely make it into Czech cinemas – from Estonia and South Africa all the way to Brazil and Cambodia.
The German film Skin on Skin shows that love can blossom even in the coldest and most brutal of places. The Polish documentary film Can You Hear Me?, meanwhile, takes us online into a woman’s video call with her mother in Ukraine. With Samba Infinito, we delve into nostalgic memories during the Brazilian carnival. The animated Canadian musical We’re Kinda Different reminds us that everybody is different and should be proud of it. The American short Nervous Energy takes an objective and ironic look at two film students arguing over the meaning of art and life. And with Family Sunday we visit a street in Mexico where a group of local gangsters has come to collect protection money.
