Jane Campion
Jane Campion was born in New Zealand and now lives in Australia. She began filmmaking in the early 1980s, attending the Australian School of Film and Television. Her first short film, Peel (1982), won the Palme D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1986. Her other works include A Girl’s Own Story (1984), Passionless Moments (1985), After Hours (1985), and the telefeature Two Friends (1986), all of which won Australian and international awards. She co-wrote and directed her first feature film, Sweetie, in 1989. The Piano (1993) won the Palme d’Or at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival. Her other features include The Portrait of a Lady (1996), based on the Henry James novel, Holy Smoke! (1999), and Bright Star (2009). She created, wrote, and directed the TV mini-series Top of the Lake (2012, 2017). Her latest film The Power of the Dog (2021) won the Silver Lion for Best Direction at the Venice Film Festival.
