Where was the legendary “Smoke” (Kouř, 1990) of Tomas Vorel’s feature coming from? The spark originated from his student project Ing. Reality with absurdity and irony with admiration are mixed in this love story of civil engineer Mirk and his girl, an unsuccessful student. Dancing, recitation, songs from the Sklep theatre and actor Tomas Hanak in an office buildings complex - all is present in this clerk musical.

Tomáš Vorel

Tomáš Vorel (1957, Prague) is a director, screenwriter and occasional actor (engaged long-term with the well known avant-garde Sklep theatre in Prague). After many amateur films and studies of directing ant the Film and TV School of Performing Arts he debuted with an anthology movie Prazska petka (1988). His second film, an unorthodox musical Smoke (Kouř, 1990) is still considered one of the mos extraordinary Czech films of the last decades. In 1995 he founded Vorel Film, a production company, whose first film was a bitter Stone Bridge (Kamenný most, 1996). He followed his feature Out of the City (Cesta z města, 2000) not only by a sequel called To the Woods (Cesta do lesa, 2012), but also by a documentary Z mesta cesta (2002), following the life journey of five characters. Just like his other films, his grotesque Skritek (2005) is also marked with a distinct artistic style. The audience appreciated his comedy Gympl (2007), and its sequel Vejska premiered in 2014.
